What makes you a professional designer?

The things you see from the moment you open your eyes are all designed either by people or by nature. The layout you see on this web page and the typography of this article are designed by designers. Some people say, being a designer is something intrinsic, a form of arts that comes solely out of your mind. On the other hand, some would define design as a soft skill that is learned through a lot of practices.

Whatever the way we define design, there are some certain criteria that every designer must follow. We’ve listed some of the must-have qualities of a designer after interviewing some professional designers with diverse experiences in their respective areas.

Let’s go through the article and have a good understanding of what makes you a smart and pro designer along the way.

Design Principles

Principles of design are something that every designer have in mind while designing anything. These principles may vary from designers to designers. Design principles are the basis of any creative design. The long list of design principles starts with the user's need. ‘Simple is smart’ is the philosophy of great design which is considered to be one of the basic principles of design. Understanding context, designing with data and making it universal are the principles to consider while attempting any design.

Design Elements

Elements are simply Line, Texture, Shape, Direction, Color, Balance and Hierarchy in design. These elements work behind any sort of stunning look in design. A true combination of these elements must result in awesome design. Any design may look awkward if that has improper use of any of these elements.

Target Audience

It does matter who and what is this design for. Designing a logo for a professional company and for a fancy club must be different. Having that in mind, design is also different for companies and organizations with different goals. You can not have a posh swimming pool in a banner of a charity organization. Context and content are the two different things that help you understand your target audience and design accordingly.

Color Concepts

Color plays a significant role in any sort of design. A designer with a poor sense of color is barely a designer. A smart designer requires sheer understanding of colors with the ability to combine different colors in a single design. A good knowledge of color variance with different age groups and genders would make someone a smart designer.

Understanding of Design Trends

Designers should keep up with the trends of designs. Understanding design trends often includes uses of different up-to-date tools, using different design patterns, typography, icons and so on. Any designer without the knowledge of trends in design will find himself off the track. Keeping up with the trends helps designers think differently and create something out of the box.

Human Psychology

Sense of design varies person to person. Having that in mind, designing something for male and female would must be different. It varies on the basis of gender, age group, area, society, country, even the religion. Designing anything with the symbol of a pig is not going to be acceptable if you design this for any middle eastern person or company. Your design will be straightaway rejected if that comes across any of such issues.

Typography

If you are a designer, you already know the importance of typography in design. Use of right typography carries a great deal of value especially when there are different types of texts in different places. Typography itself is a design. Try to use it properly.

Design & Market Research

Designing something without having any clear knowledge of market is not going to give any good outcome. A professional designer needs to research on the trending design in the market and understand the needs of the people. Market research helps designers create popular design products.

Good Grasp of UX & UI Design

UX and UI are the two buzzwords in design industry nowadays. People in web design industry are mostly familiar with these. UX denotes User Experience and UI denotes User Interface. Designers who want to work in the web industry are highly recommended to have a good grasp of UX and UI design.

Hands on Skills with Tools

Designing requires a set of hands on skills on different tools. You can design on any platform you want but a good familiarity with tools of that platform is a must for the professional designers. A good designer needs to know the uses of tools and uses them properly whenever necessary. Working in a professional design company helps you gain such skills.

Being in the Loop of Design Community

Design communities helps you become a smart designer. Sharing your ideas with other designers and getting help from some professional designers would definitely be an opportunity to learn more. Sometimes being with some smart designers help you more than taking a professional course. Community is the way to solve the problems you face along the way and a great way to update your design skills.

Being a professional designer is not always a smooth job. It takes hard work, patience, passion and most importantly having most of the qualities we discussed above. Anybody wanting to be a professional designer is recommended to have each of those qualities and skills. Happy designing.
